Spicy Tofu

This is an easy, spicy dish that is perfect with soba noodles or steamed rice.Spicy Tofu

Serves 2-3.

  • 12 oz extra firm tofu (sprouted tofu is best here)
  • 1/4 c water
  • 1/4 c apple juice
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp molasses
  • 1 Tbsp ketchup
  • 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp ginger powder
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds (garnish)

  1. Rinse the tofu and pat it dry. Cut into half-inch cubes and set aside on clean towel to absorb any liquid.
  2. In a small skillet or heavy pot, mix the sauce ingredients: water, apple juice, olive oil, molasses, ketchup, vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, ginger powder and red pepper flakes. Add the tofu and place on medium heat. Bring to a simmer.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring frequently, until all the liquid is absorbed into the tofu (about 20 minutes). Serve hot over steamed rice or soba noodles with a sprinkling of sesame seeds.
