Spicy Molasses Cookies

Makes about 15 medium cookies.


  • 1/2 c all purpose unbleached flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • pinch salt
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable shortening
  • 2 Tbsp sour cream or plain yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp molasses
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 Tbsp beaten egg
  • 1-2 tsp sugar


  1. Into a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, cloves and salt.
  2. Melt the shortening. Pour it into a small bowl. Whisk in the sour cream. Gradually add and whisk in the molasses, brown sugar, and beaten egg.
  3. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and mix well, using a wooden spoon. Cover and let stand one hour.
  4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Oil or spray a large baking sheet.
  5. Drop batter/dough by heaping teaspoonfuls onto the cookie sheet, forming 15 cookies, evenly spaced. Dust with sugar and bake in the center of the oven for about 8 minutes. Transfer to a cooling rack.
