Easy Enchilada Sauce

If you have run out of enchilada sauce, as I did recently, or you just want a better tasting sauce than store-bought varieties, try this easy, quick version. It will make your enchiladas taste spectacular!

Makes about 4 cups.


  • 2 Tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 c tomato sauce
  • 2 c water
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 Tbsp dry cilantro
  • 1 Tbsp butter


  1. Heat oil in large 2-quart saucepan over medium low heat.
  2. Stir in flour, chili powder, and cumin; cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  3. Add tomato sauce, water, and garlic powder; bring to a boil and simmer for about 10 minutes.
  4. Add cilantro and butter. Use in your favorite recipes.
