
Whether you are making Strawberry Shortcake or Peach, Plum, or Blackberry Shortcake, you need a good, easy biscuit base for your dessert. This works so beautifully, and takes little time to bake.
Serves 6-8.
Ingredients:
- 2 c all purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 3 Tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 c vegetable shortening
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 3/4 c buttermilk
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and butter an 8 x 8″ baking pan.
- In medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.
- In small skillet, melt shortening and butter together. Cool 5 minutes.
- Add shortening mixture to bowl, along with buttermilk.
- Stir lightly with fork until barely mixed and no dry ingredients remain.
- Place dough in prepared pan and spread evenly. Use clean hands to press mixture evenly into pan.
- Bake 20-25 minutes or until golden brown on top.
- Cut into 6 or more pieces. Slice each piece crosswise if desired, and spread with softened butter, before topping with a generous ladle of sweetened fruit and a dollop of whipped cream.
